What we're probably looking at is an opening weekend between $32 million and $37 million for the weekend, unless the hardcore fans rally for repeat viewings over today and tomorrow. So yes, films available on Thursday night at around 7:00-9:00pm will perhaps be more front-loaded right off the bat since people with kids/day jobs who couldn't handle a midnight screening may well opt for a Thursday night show. Keep in mind that the whole 'advance night at 7pm' thing is relatively new as 'normal operating procedure', so most of the front-loaded comparisons are going to involve just midnight showings. Giving Pacific Rim a 2.3x weekend multiplier gives you only $33.5 million for the weekend, while a 2.2x gives you just $32.1 million for the opening weekend. But that also presumes a relatively non-front loaded 2.4x weekend multiplier off of its $14.6 million opening day. If we use the closest example as a comparison ( The Dark Knight), Pacific Rim might end up front-loaded to the tune of 10%-Thursday, giving the film a $36 million opening weekend ( The Dark Knight earned 11% of its opening weekend just at midnight). What this may mean is that Pacific Rim may-well be front-loaded along the lines of a heavily anticipated mega-blockbuster without the actual mega-blockbuster numbers to match. Pacific Rim earned 24.6% of its "Friday" total on Thursday night alone, which is about on par with the 26% that The Dark Knight made purely via Thursday midnight shows ($18m/$67m).įor reference, The Hunger Gamesearned 12% of its opening weekend via its midnight-only Thursday screenings ($19m/$152m) and 29% of its Friday number at midnight ($19.7m/$67.2m) and both mega-openers ended up with over/under 2.3x weekend multipliers.

Three mid-July weekends ago, Inception grabbed $3 million at midnight and ended up with a $22 million opening Friday (13.6%). The film earned $3.6 million on Thursday and didn't gross anywhere near the $25 million that World War Z grossed in its first Friday after a $3.6 million (14.4%) Thursday gross or the $19.4 million that The Great Gatsby earned after a $3.2 million (17%) Thursday night gross.

Sound off below and tell us what you're watching this weekend, as well as which movie you think will top the box office.Pacific Rim has grossed $14.6 million in its first 1.25 days of play. Pacific Rim FTW!Īlright folks, now it's your turn. My Pick of the Week: Duh, it's the one with the giant robots fighting giant monsters. I'm a huge dorky fan of Pacific Rim, and so I'll send some good vibes its way by predicting its triumphant win over Grown Ups 2. My Prediction: Man, I don't know where to go this weekend. It may not be the best, but it's comfortable and familiar, and sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered. Why It Might Win the Weekend: The first one did great business and while the humor is a touch lowbrow, Sandler's accessible comedy plays well for a lot of people. This time the guys square off against an unruly pack of frat boys led by a surprisingly funny Taylor Lautner. What's the Scoop: Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James and Chris Rock return (minus Rob Schneider for some reason) for this sequel, which again follows the trials and tribulations of family life, fart jokes and animals that urinate on you. It's garnered enough good word that as of yesterday the film was leading all advance ticket sales right here on Fandango. Why It Might Win the Weekend: Despite some bad tracking numbers earlier this month, Pacific Rim has been riding a tremendous amount of buzz online and in particular on various social sites. and you didn't even have to clean your room afterwards! Imagine your childhood memories of playing with action figures brought to life on the big screen. Guillermo del Toro's passionate and colorful homage to Godzilla and anime is surprisingly chock-full of all kinds of awesome. What's the Scoop: It's being sold as a robots-vs.-monsters movie and that's pretty much exactly what it is.

Who will win? Will either survive? Let's take a closer look. We have a giant big-budgeted monster movie that's actually arriving as a bit of an underdog, and its stiff competition is coming in the form of a silly Adam Sandler-led comedy. And it's on! We always see some weird box office stories creep up during the summer movie season, and this weekend is serving up exactly that.
